As we embark on this odyssey into Bada Bagh, let’s dive deep into the sands
that cradle the enigmatic history of this oasis.
Bada Bagh, or ‘Big Garden’ was commissioned by Maharawal Jait Singh in the early 16th century, marking the beginning of a dynasty’s homage to their forebearers.

The cenotaphs, also known as chhatris, are not merely architectural marvels; they are a testament to the valour and vision of Jaisalmer’s rulers. It is believed that during his reign, he built a tank and a dam at this spot 6 kilometers from the city to create a lush oasis in the otherwise barren land.

Irrigation channels were laid to take the water from the reservoir to the land around it. His actions bore fruit, and soon the land was thriving with cultivation. Mangoes, date palms, and other produce grew aplenty. Thus, the name Bada Bagh. Post-death, his efforts were continued by his successors and additions
included a mango orchard and several stone cenotaphs. From there began the tradition of erecting monuments of stone in memory of the Rajputs who ruled
over Jaisalmer until the 20 th Century.
As you meander through this historical oasis, envision the grandeur of the royal ceremonies and the echoes of the celebrations that once reverberated here.

The cenotaphs, adorned with intricate carvings, stand as silent witnesses to the opulence and cultural vibrancy of the bygone era.
So, let the sands beneath your feet transport you through time. Feel the pulse of history as you explore Bada Bagh, where every step unearths another layer of Rajasthan’s legacy!
